Italy is located in the south of Europe, near France. The capital of this country is Rome. The poblation of Italy is around 60, 92 million. The typical food of Italy is pasta such as pizza or spaghettis.
The flag of Italy is green, white and red.
·Some culture:
We know some architecture typical of Rome such as "The Coliseum":
-It is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. It was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire, and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It is the largest amphitheatre in the world. It was built between (70-80 AD)
Now you can see a video about Rome:
The city of Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus. They were twin brothers. They were abandoned by their parents as babies and put into a basket that was then placed into the River Tiber. The basket ran aground and the twins were discovered by a female wolf. The wolf nursed the babies for a short time before they were found by a shepherd. The shepherd then brought up the twins.
When Romulus and Remus became adults, they decided to found a city where the wolf had found them. The brothers quarrelled over where the site should be and Remus was killed by his brother. This left Romulus the sole founder of the new city and he gave his name to it – Rome. The date given for the founding of Rome is 753 BC.
·Roman Gods:
-JUPITER: He was the master of the gods and the main god of the Romans. In his hand he held thunderbolts which he could hurl from the sky.
-JUNO: She was the wife of Jupiter, the goddess of women and fertility. Her symbols were a pomegranate and a peacock.
-MARS: He was the god of war, the strongest and most fearsome god, except for Jupiter.
-VENUS: She was the goddess of love and beauty.
-MINERVA: She was the goddess of wisdom, learning, art crafts and industry. Her symbol was the owl.
- NEPTUNE: He was the powerful god of the sea. His symbol was the trident.
-CERES: She was the goddess of the harvest, always depicted carrying a bundle of grain
-VULCAN: He was the blacksmith of the gods and a god of the underworld. If he stoked his furness too hard volcanos might erupt. He was the god of blacksmiths and volcanos.
- DIANA: She was the goddess of hunting and a goddess of the moon.
- BACCHUS: He was the god of wine and partying. Naturally, he was one of Rome's most popular gods.
- MERCURY: He was the messenger of the gods. the wings on his helmet and sandals allowed him to travel very quickly to wherever a god might send him. He was the god of travellers and tradesmen.
-VESTA: She was the goddess of the hearth and home. She was very important to Romans. In her temple a flame was always kept burning as in the 'hearth of Rome' the flame should never go out.
And now the questions:
1-.Would you like to visit Italy one day? Why?
2-.Choose one of the Roman Gods, and tell one short legend.
3-. Which monuments did you like? Why?
4-. From the video: What is the typical transport that they use?
Hi, everyone! A very good post, Ana Mari, it is very complete.
ReplyDelete1- I have been in Italy, two years ago, and it is the beautifullest country I have seen ever. But, if I can, I want to visit Roma, Florencia, the Vatican city, ... And Venice again!
2- "Apollo enjoyed showing up now and then at the various temples around the ancient world built in his honor. One day, Apollo swung by the temple in Troy.
Cassandra, a young and beautiful priestess, worked at the temple. The minute Apollo saw Cassandra, he fell in love. (Love at first sight ran in the family. After all, Apollo was Jupiter's son.)
Apollo offered Cassandra a deal. He would give her a very special gift, the gift of prophecy - the ability to see the future - if she would give him a kiss.
Cassandra thought that was a great deal. With a laugh, Apollo gave her his gift. Instantly, Cassandra could see the future. She saw Apollo, helping to destroy Troy. When Apollo bent his head to gently kiss her, she angrily spit in his face.
Apollo was furious. He could not take away his gift. That's not how it worked. But he could add to it.
Although Cassandra could, forever after, see the future, no one believed her. Ever. That was his added gift. When Cassandra begged her people in Troy to watch out for the Trojan horse, not one person believed her. "
3- My favourite monument of all Italy is the Pisa Tower, because it is one of the most emblematic of the country.
4- Sorry, I couldn't see he video, it sais me "error"

Hello class!!
ReplyDelete1- I would like to visit Italy because it is very beautiful!
2- Diana and Actaeon:
The Greek myth of Diana and Actaeon can be found within Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The tale recounts the unfortunate fate of a young hunter named Actaeon, who was the grandson of Cadmus, and his encounter with chaste Diana, goddess of the hunt. The latter is nude and enjoying a bath in a spring with help from her escort of nymphs when the mortal man unwittingly stumbles upon the scene. The nymphs scream in surprise and attempt to cover Diana, who, in a fit of embarrassed fury, splashes water upon Actaeon. He is transformed into a deer with a dappled hide and long antlers, robbed of his ability to speak, and thereafter promptly flees in fear. It is not long, however, before his fellow hunters and his own hounds track him down and kill him, failing to recognize their friend.
3- I would like to visit the Coliseum because that is great, and there, lions and men fought in the Antiquity.
4- I have the same problem than Inma, I can't watch the video...

Hi class!
ReplyDeleteI love Italy, good post Ana Mari!
1.- Yes I would like to visit Italy because, I love Rome, Venice and I want to visit Pompeii
2.- Dionysus was a new god when Pentheus was king in Thebes. Pentheus was king because his grandfather Cadmus, founder of Thebes, had stepped down. Dionysus had recently (recently for a god, that is) sprung to life from his father Zeus' thigh because when his mortal mother was killed, Zeus snatched the embryo and sewed it into his leg. Whispers and mysteries about Dionysus' birth made some of the Thebans quick to despise the newcomer. Dionysus' mother, Semele, the doubters said, used Zeus as an excuse to hide an illicit lover. Dionysus said:
since my
mother's sisters, who least of all should have done
it, denied that Dionysus was the son of Zeus,
saying that Semele, when she became a mother by
some mortal lover, tried to foist her sin on Zeus-a
clever ruse of Cadmus, which, they boldly
asserted, caused Zeus to slay her for the falsehood
about the marriage. Wherefore these are they
whom I have driven frenzied from their homes,
and they are dwelling on the hills with mind
distraught.
3. I would like to visit Pompeii, like I said before

ReplyDeleteEx. 1| Yes! I'd like to visit it because I like travelling, but it isn't my favourite one.
Ex. 2| Phospheros: He is the 'Bearer of Light' and God of the Evening Star and Morning Star. He denies any connection with Satan or any scaly tailed entity with horns.
Under the Greeks he was the gleaming God Phospheros.
Ex. 3| I like Venice Canals, they're amazing!

2.-Narcissus was a beautiful young man . The maids fell in love with Narcissus, but he rejected them . Among young wounded by his love was the nymph Echo , who had angered Hera and therefore it was doomed to repeat the last words of what you say . Therefore, he was unable to speak to Narciso your love, but one day when he was walking through the woods , eventually moving away from their peers. When he asked "Is there anyone here? " Eco said, "Here , here." Unable to see hidden among the trees , Narciso shouted : "Come and see ." After answering : "Come," Eco emerged from the trees with open arms . Narcissus cruelly refused to accept his love , so that the nymph, desolate , hid in a cave and there was consumed until only her voice.
To punish Narcissus for his vanity , Nemesis , goddess of revenge, made her fall in love with his own image reflected in a fountain. In a rapt contemplation , unable to move away from its image , ended by throwing himself into the water. At the site where his body had fallen , grew a beautiful flower that did honor to the name and memory of Narcissus.
