'Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' or 'Macedonia'?

Why this tittle? Well, there is a dispute between Greece and Macedonia about the name of this new country.
Many time ago, Macedonia was the name given to a very important city in Greece and now, the government doesn't want this country to have this name that has accompanied Greece throughout its history, so, due to this big conflict, United Nations has taken part several times to stop both countries from discussing.
At the end, they have decided that the people that are in favor with Greece, this country is named 'Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' and the people that doesn't mind this problem name it as 'Macedonia'.

But, Was Macedonia always as it is now?
Of course, it isn't. At first, there was a single country called Yugoslav formed by six republics:
-Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina
-Republic of Croatia
-Republic of Macedonia
-Republic of Montenegro
-Republic of Serbia
-Republic of Slovenia

So, there was a conflict between them due to political, economic and cultural causes, as well as religious and ethnic problems, this caused a civil war that broke out this country into six new countries that you can see in the picture and also it ended the life of many people during 1991 and 2001.

Here you have a video that shows us some moments of the war and how was life during this period.

And now is time to talk about the good things that this country has. As I know you'll probably get bored reading a lot of things that you'll not like, I'm going to sum up the most important things about its culture in some pictures and videos, that way, you'll know the same things but in a quickly and funnier way:

 Macedonian denar

Here you have a quiz where you can discover funny things about Macedonia, some of them are true and others are false, you have to find out the true ones.

And that's all, due to the youth of this country, there aren't more interesting things to know.

And the questions:
1-With what name you prefer to call this country? Why?

2-Can you say me the number of deaths during the civil war?

3-What is the name of the money used in Macedonia?

4-Would you live in this country? Why?/Why not?

Jag älskar dig, klass!

Hej min kära klass, kommer jag att relatera lite mer till Sverige! Do you know what that is? That’s my way to welcome you to my entry: Hello dear class, I’m going to relate you with Sweden a bit more!

Come on, get on with me in the Silverpilen! What? You don’t know what’s that? Well, I’ll have to explain you the story of the ghostMetro-train that runs in Stockholm… History says that the Silverpilen was the only train built in 1960 with Silver carriages. It was installed, and it wasn’t often viewed.  But then, all the trains of Stockholm’s underground were replaced by newer ones. Nevertheless, what thestory, the legend says is that after midnight, the train runs fastly by Swedish capital city’s subway. The Silverpilen is often related toKymlinge metro station, situated on line 11, never finished. This station is known in the city as the ghost station, and Stockholmares (people living in Stockholm) say that "only the dead get off at Kymlinge", so we are able to think that the train is a transport between the “world of the living” and “the beyond”.

As I’m the owner of this entry, I’ll change the destination of the train. Firstly, I’ll take you to the Mythology station. There are several fantasy characters as the Trolls usually represented as huge demons. In contrast, sometimes people say that humans weren’t the only clever being living in the Earth; there are lots of clever beings more as it’s the case of Trolls. Another famous mythological character is the Little Mermaid, a Nordic being. There’s a famous statue near Malmo, in the capital of Denmark,Copenhagen.

And now, we will travel to the Food station. Sweden isn’t well-known because of its food, but there are lots of delicious dishes as it’s theKöttbullar, a kind of meatball served with Brown sauce. Another famous plate is Pepparkaka, a cake eaten in Saint Lucia, the most famous holiday in Sweden, which is well-known worldwide.

To finish, I’d like to mention the most important cities in Sweden. The most-populated city, is its capital (Stockholm).  Not long ago, I saw that Stockholm opened the highest merry-go-round in the world, it was 120 meters high! Another important city is Gothemburg, the second most-populated, and Malmo, the third one.

To show you these fantastic cities, I’ve made a mix of Lynda Wudroff's videos, who presents in a humoristic way the important places of the country and Jukkasjärvi, a Swede town famed by its Icehotel. Sorry for the quality, you know how Windows Movie Maker is… If you are having problems watching it, click here.

QUESTIONS
About the text:
  1.  Do you find interesting the first legend? Why?
  2. Search in a translator the sentence in the title.

About the video:
  1.  What happens to Lynda’s tongue in the Icehotel?
  2.  Does she like the hotel snack?
  3. What’s really Malmo famed by?
  4. According to Lynda, are the Swedish people warm-hearted?

GREECE

Greece is a country that belongs to the European Union. It's situated in the south of Europe (Balkan Peninsula) next to Mediterranean Sea. At present, this country has 11 millions of inhabitants.

ECONOMIC CRISIS

Greece has had a lot of problems with other countries and the European Union because of his economic situation in last years. Also, this country received economic helps of other countries of the European Union.

FLORA Y FAUNA

The 50% of the Greece's area is covered by forests with vegetation. During the World War II were destroyed millions of hectares by several enemy troops and the Greek government conceived a plan to replant all the trees that were destroyed.
Seals and turtles live in the seas around Greece, meanwhile in forests there are brown bears, lynxes, grey wolfs…

CULTURE

ESCULPTURE

Talking of culture, in Greece, some of the most famous sculptures of all the times were built. For example: Laocoön and his sons.

ARCHITECTURE

On the other hand, the architecture also was very important; the best example of Greek architecture is The Parthenon.

GASTRONOMY

There isn't a typical food of Greece because they have the Mediterranean diet. This diet is very known in Europe, it's typical of the countries that are near of the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean diet is composed by vegetables, olive oil, meat and fish. This is a very healthy diet!

MUSIC

The Greek music is not very known in the world, but this country won The Eurovision Song Contest in 2005. The composer of the winner song was Helena Paparizou that sang in English the song called My Number One.

SPORT

I can't forget to talk about the first Olympic Games. They were taken in Athens; in 1896 (they had a huge assistance). Also, The Olympic Games were taken in Athens in the year 2004 (some of the Spanish sporty people that still following actives went to those Olympic Games). A curious thing about the Greek history is that the Marathon was "invented" in honour to a Greek soldier that ran 42'195 kilometres from a city called Marathon to Athens to announce to all Athenian people that their troops have beaten to the Persians. The Marathons were Olympic Sport from the starts of The Olympic Games.

MYTHOLOGY

And I can't forget the famous Greek mythology! The Greek mythology tells us the great feats of the Greek gods and heroes that they did in the past. There are hundreds of stories, poems, sculptures, temples, etc. dedicated to gods and heroes like Zeus, Ares, Apollo, Hades, Athena…

A BEAUTIFUL TRIP IN GIBRALTAR

4 years ago we went to a place that, while in Spain, belongs to England (Gibraltar). There, we stayed 3 days and 2 nights.

We did many fun things, we practice English and met another culture.
One of the most fascinating places was the beach of Bologna, where we discovered many things about the Romans and the ruins of Baelo Claudia. It was the most fun day ever.

For me the most fun was, apart from the beaches, nights in hotel rooms.

 Questions:
What restaurant do you like more?
What do you think about the last day of travel?

GOOD BYE.

A WONDERFUL TRIP TO LONDON

Last year we went to a very amazing city called London. There, we stayed five days and we had a lot of fun visiting lots of places.

We visited many tourist places such as:

 Buckingham Palace

This is the place where the queen Elizabeth II lives. Every morning there is a change of the guard. We saw it and there were a lot of people.

Big Ben

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock in the Palace of Westminster. The tower is awesome when you are next to it.

Hyde Park

It is a wonderful place to relax, rest and play many sports. Moreover it is very big and I think it has a football field inside.

In spite of the bad weather, we visited lots of monuments and we went shopping in the center of the city. The hotel was perfect for people like us, because there we could meet teenagers from different places in Spain. I don’t know how is English food because we ate hamburgers and pizza every day.

We visited lots of monuments as I say before, but the place I liked the most was the Natural History Museum. It was great! At the entry there was a big skeleton of a dinosaur. In addition, there were lots of different fossils and prehistoric animals.

Finally I want to say thanks to our teacher María José and her husband Pepe for this wonderful travel to London and of course the trip wouldn't be the same without my friends.

And now some questions:
1)Did you meet some new people there?
2)What did you like the most of London?

Bye!
