UP! Syndrome

Did you know that about 1 in 4 people in the world had, have or will have a mental disorder? I suppose, that when you see the title of my post, some of you start laughing. Yes, we have to recognise that we make fun of them. So here is my first question: Had you ever mock of this people? Don’t lie; be honest, please. I know you’ll never do it again ;)

So, to talk about Down Syndrome (we will abbreviate it as ''DS''), first we have to know why some people have this illness. All start in the mother’s womb. Almost everyone have two chromosomes 21 [we’ve seen it in Biology, but if you don’t remember, I’ll say that it’s a kind of chromosome (it contains our DNA)], but people with the syndrome have three of them. It’s a big difficulty for the body, that starts working at this moment! Some organs are malformed, and here starts the problem.

I’ll tell you the story of my uncle, who is 34 years old. My mother always says me, that we are very lucky, because although life expectancy is growing, DS don’t live like us. He is 34. Physically, he’s 70; and mentally, he’s 10 years old.
My uncle is the third son in my mother’s family, and obviously the last (my grandparents were scared of having children after him). During the pregnancy, anybody said anything to them. Even the doctors, when my uncle was born, didn’t notice he was a Down Syndrome. My grandfather was very happy, but when doctors give him the notice... He was really, really sad. But do you know what did he do? He was working day and night, during 7 years to save my uncle, because doctors said to my grandparents that he couldn’t live, so they give them... but to die in his house. My grandmother took ill, and my aunt got married. Obviously, my mother became the housewife when she was 13 years old, and she couldn’t study.

Probably you didn’t read the story, or maybe you are asking: why does he tell this? Because I get angry when you don’t want to meet, or talk with someone ill. So remember, that when you mock a Down Syndrome or someone with a mental disorder, you have to think the story of sacrifice behind him/her. Moreover, I meet lots of DS and I can say you that they are lovelier than someone of us.

And, now, I want you to watch this video that I’ve made. It contains daily routine and dreams of a girl with DS. Then, you will see some news (real news,
obviously) related with DS people. PS: I think it's better to load the video to watch it better.

Their brain work less than ours. Their heart can stop easier than ours. But remember: their soul is bigger.

And now, the questions:
· Where does Moira study? Tell me one of her "dreams".
· Mention one of the news. What do you think of it?
· Had you ever meet someone with DS or a mental disorder? Tell us the experience.
· Find in Google another mental disorder and explain us what it consist of.
PS: Remember the question I’ve made at the beginning.

I hope you like my post!

  1. Hello Rafa! First I want to say is that your post is amazing. Very good job Rafa, congratulations!

Refering to the first question, I never mock of this people because I think that they are the same that us or even better. But unfortunately I sometimes see boys that mock of this people for their faces or movements.

    1) Moira studies in North Ireland´s university. She loves college. I can´t heard very weel her dreams... I´m sorry

2)I´m going to talk about this new " A DS italian works in" I think that this people perfectly can study what they want because a illness doesn´t impede that they work or something similar

    3) I meet with Rafa´s uncle. He is a good person and very friendly. When you are with he, you spend a good time. I feel so good when I stay with people like Rafa´s uncle. They aren´t different to the rest!

4)Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease involving the development of demyelinating lesions, and chronic neurodegenerative central nervous system

  2. Hi everybody!

First, I want to say to Rafa that this post is so special because you are absolutely right.

    1. She goes to a University of North Florida. I don’t understand very well her dream, but I think she want to visit some American places or same similar.

    2. I’m going to talk about a good new. The DS Italian student that works in Spain and he’s a Erasmus Prog. I think this is incredible, because there is people that say ‘The DS people can’t study, or they can’t realize some activities that we make in our normal life’ and this is absolutely false.

    3. Last year, I went to a summer camp and in a room near my room, there was a girl with DS. I learnt so much of her, because when you are when a person with a mental disorder, you can see that they aren't ''rare'', they are people like us. In these occasions, you also learn to appreciate the health and welfare...

    4. Another mental disorder that we can find is 'Bipolar disorder', it is a psychiatric diagnosis in which people experience continuous mood swings that can reach the symptoms of depression.

PS: I didn’t know that 1 in 4 people are DS people, it is an important date because we have to be prepared if in some point of our life, we have a familiar with DS.

I like so much this post, Rafa! Goodbye.

  3. Hi rafa! What an amazing post, it's beautiful!
    - Moira studies in North Ireland's university. I don't understand what is she estuding, and what are her dreams.

    - My favourite new is "life expectancy grows in DS. It grows to 60 years old", because it's a very good new.

    - Some years ago, I meet to Manuel, a boy with DS, she was in the swimming club of Montoro. Now he is in 4th of ESO, and anyone moth him.

    - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a complex disorder characterized by fatigue that is not improved in the bed, it can be worse with physical or mental activity. People often CFS are active at a significantly lower level than they could before they had the disease.

    Bye!!

  5. Thanks everyone! Well, I know that the hardest question is about Moira. It's more difficult to understand her, like in Spanish is not easy to understand DS. But I can say that I could understand her, so it's posible!
Then, I'll talk about the place where she studies. She said it in a different way, we can say, an abbreviation. Are you agree with Antonio and Inma or with Ana?
Finally, I'll talk about her dream. She mention it at the beginning and at the end. It's related with media.

So, these are my clues! ;)

  6. Hello everybody!

Before to start, I want to felicitate to Rafa for his post, it is a very good topic!! And he has been very original. Congratulations!

I swear, I never mock of these people, may be a little special, because they can't do all the things that we can do normally.

1- She studies in a university of North Ireland. I think that Moira says that she wants to go to America

2- I like the new called: "DS girl creates a new typography. It's called Anna Beta". I think that it is a very interesting new, because people thinks that DS people can't use new technologies, but to know of new technologies you only have to study that and you must like it, so, the DS girl likes it and I suppose that that DS girl study aboutnew technologies and she could create a new typography.

3- I don't meet to a DS person, but I say many DS people every dat for Montoro and they seem nice and good people, and I think that they give us many love, they are very affectionate.

4- Klinefelter's syndrome, is a condition in which a human has an extra X chromosome. While females have an XX chromosomal make up, and males an XY, affected individuals have at least two X chromosomes and at least one Y chromosome.

    Good night class!!

    A very good post, Rafael !! :P

That the reason for I want hug them when I see them, they are better persons that the majory of persons that don't have this syndrome.

THE ANSWER OF THE NEXT QUESTIONS:

1-Moira studies at North Ireland's university, I think that her dream is see an American idol, this is a TV program. Maybe it is not correct but I heard something related to it.

2-I'm going to mention the first new yoy put, Rafa: DS gril creates a new typography. I think this is fantastic, this is one of the many things that show that DS people are able to do whatever they want, they are not anormal.

3-Yes, in the high school, like Inma, he was very friendly. I think that the people that have in their environment people with this syndrome are verly lucky (like Rafa said in the post) they emit many love.

4-Hypercalcaemia (British English) or hypercalcemia (American English) is an elevated calcium level in the blood. It can have consecuences like mental disorders and other consecuences more. I say it, because my neighbor have this desease, and she remember me to much to people with dwarfism.

    BYE! And congratulations again Rafa!
